Abstract One of the main concerns of translation studies has long been the Translation Quality Assessment (TQA). The notion of quality is of a vague and controversial nature. Scholars in the field of translation studies have enumerated different criteria which contribute to the quality of the translation but most of the contributions were theoretical. The present study adopted an empirical and descriptive approach towards TQA and sought to propose the translation assessment criteria based on the text types. The text types which were considered here were expressive, informative and vocative text types. The present study consists of two parts. The first part addresses the following research questions: 1. Which factors should be considered in translation evaluation of expressive, informative and vocative texts? 2. Which factors contribute most/ least to the quality of the translation of each text types? 3. Should we consider different parameters in evaluating translations of different text types? The second part of the study was concerned with the students’ awareness of the translation quality assessment criteria used by their instructors when evaluating their translations. It addressed the following research questions: 4. Are the Iranian students of B.A. degree of Translation Studies and English Literature aware of the criteria by which their translations are evaluated at universities? 5. Are there any differences between the students of Translation Studies and English Literature, regarding their level of the awareness of the criteria employed by their instructors for assessing their translations? To conduct such a study, two questionnaires were used. In the first part of the study fourteen professors from the department of English of the universities of Isfahan, Shahid Beheshti and Allame Tabatabaei as well as forty-six M. A. students of Translation Studies from the universities of Isfahan and Allame Tabatabaei participated. With the help of these participants, questionnaire No.1 was designed and answered. The results obtained showed that the quality factors which must be considered in TQA are ‘grammar’, ‘word equivalents’, ‘Style’, ‘consistency of the vocabularies used in the translation’, ‘attending to the target language’, ‘layout of the translation’, ‘unity of the translated text’, ‘the unit of translators’ translation’, ‘translator’s level of freedom in rendering the original text for the target readers’, ‘preserving the connotative meaning as opposed to denotative one’, ‘the extent of the translator’s attending to the readership’, preserving the sound effects and word plays’, ‘the extent of the translator’s attending to the writer of the original text’. The results of the statistical analysis on the mentioned quality factors indicated that, the significance rate of the some criteria applied to TQA of texts changes based on the text types. The most important criteria in TQA of expressive, vocative and informative texts are ‘unity of the translated text’, ‘attending to the readership’ and ‘word equivalence’, respectively. The least important factors considered in TQA of the expressive, vocative and informative texts are, ‘attending to the target language’, ‘correspondence of the layout of the translated text to that of the original’, and ‘rendering the wordplays’. To conduct the second part of the study questionnaire No.2 was given to four instructors of the universities of Isfahan, Shahid Beheshti and Allame Tabatabaei who were teaching translation courses and fifty-seven senior and junior students of English literature as well as seventy-eight students of Translation Studies whom they were teaching. The results obtained from this part of the study indicated that, the students were almost aware of the quality factors by which their translations were evaluated in the translation courses by their instructors. It was also observed that there is no significant difference between the students of Translation Studies and English Literature regarding their awareness of the TQA criteria employed by the instructors. Keywords: (TQA) translation quality assessment, expressive text, informative or expository text, operative or vocative text, typology of texts, translation strategies.
